The Heritage Lottery Fund awards grants to projects across the country that open up elements of our cultural heritage for everyone to enjoy.

Syedpur to Sunderland will focus on the culture and traditions of Sunderland’s Bangladeshi community. The majority of the Bangladeshi community in the city hail from the Syedpur region, and the project will explore how cultural traditions have changed through the years.

Julie Elliott said:

“Sunderland’s Bangladeshi centre is at the heart of my city’s Bangladeshi community, offering support to individuals who use the centre and welcoming the wider community to activities.”

“I know that the Bangladeshi centre does vital work in campaigning on issues like dementia research and supporting adults with learning difficulties.”

“That’s why I’m delighted that this new project has the funding it needs to properly celebrate the rich cultural heritage of our Bangladeshi community.”
