Southwick residents received a surprise helping hand with their community litter pick when local MP, Julie Elliott, turned up.

In just one hour Julie helped fill 21 bags of rubbish in and around Old Mill Road, Southwick.

The litter pick was organised by Southwick Ward’s Labour Councillors Norma Wright, Kelly Chequer and Miles Elliott who have also set up a petition lobbying the Prime Minister, Theresa May, to provide fair funding to the City Council.

Julie said: “Theresa May’s predecessor cut funding to Sunderland by many times the national average which means the Council cannot provide the level of service to us, the residents of the city, which they have been able to historically.

“I know litter is one of the issues local residents are most worried about, not just in Southwick but across Sunderland.  The Help Southwick petition gives the new Prime Minister a chance to right the wrongs of the previous Tory administration by giving our city a fair deal.”

To sign the petition or to help out with future litter picks please contact Councillor Kelly Chequer on 07917263494.
