New research from Asthma UK has revealed 80% of North East asthmatics struggle to afford the price of prescriptions – and more than half have cut back on medication due to cost.

The rationing of medication puts people’s lives at risk and this week I pledged my support to the charity’s Stop Unfair Asthma Prescription Charges campaign.

No one should have to pay to breathe. People with other life-threatening conditions, such as diabetes and epilepsy, get their prescriptions free. The same should apply here.

Last year, more than 460 people were hospitalised with asthma in Sunderland. It is time for the Government to do more to help those who live with this chronic condition.
