Julie Elliott MP Standing up for Sunderland Central
The Government has this week proposed minor changes to Universal Credit – but I believe a major overhaul is urgently needed to fix a flawed system which has left so many struggling with hardship.
Lack of support for applicants, lengthy waits for first payments and problems over sick pay claims are all causing significant financial difficulties – difficulties that could push millions into poverty.
Several constituents have contacted me on this issue and I recently wrote to the Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, to ask what support was available to claimants who were facing problems.
Sadly, the answer I was given – that help with personal budgeting is available – is just not good enough. The Government needs to make major changes to a system which is letting so many down.
