Julie Elliott MP Standing up for Sunderland Central
The North East Ambulance Service this week reported an extremely worrying increase in assaults on staff – from 240 in 2012/13 to 292 in 2017/18.
It is vital we tackle this problem and, today, the Assaults on Emergency Workers (Offences) Bill faces its final House of Commons vote.
The Bill would introduce a new offence of common assault against emergency workers – and require courts to treat such attacks as an aggravating factor for sentencing purposes.
I fully support this call for further protection for front-line personnel. The same protection police officers have should be extended.
We need the same protection for all our emergency service workers. People should be properly protected.
