The Supreme Court has ruled that Parliament must be given a say on the introduction of Article 50. 

I welcome this morning’s ruling confirming that only Parliament -; not the Prime Minister -; will have the power to trigger the Brexit process.   

This will give MPs the opportunity to table amendments to the legislation, ensuring that it is properly scrutinised and that people in places like Sunderland have their voices heard.

Through the Prime Minister’s attempt to prevent Parliament from having a say on Article 50, she has wasted time and taxpayers’ money.

I’m glad that Parliamentary sovereignty has been upheld and that MPs will be able to ensure that the Government listens to my constituents’ views on the Brexit deal. It’s only right that the deal is subject to robust and proper scrutiny.

In light of Nissan’s announcement last week that they are to review their UK investment strategy once the terms of Brexit are made clear, it’s clear that Brexit poses a real threat to people’s livelihoods.

I can assure people in Sunderland that I will use this opportunity to push for the best deal for my city and the wider North East, including the continued access to the EU single market and customs union that businesses in the region rely on.
