Julie spoke at a debate on Wednesday 26 March on Competition in the Energy Market. The debate was dominated by the breaking news that morning, that SEE would freeze its energy bills and separate its generation and supply businesses.

Julie said:

“What is clear from today is that David Cameron’s argument against Labour’s price freeze has been totally demolished. For the last six months all we have heard from the Prime Minister, the Energy Secretary and the energy companies is that a price freeze is infeasible and unworkable. We welcome SEE’s announcement today, but let me be clear -; Labour will legislate to set a price freeze that affects all the energy companies, alongside our proposals to reset the market by separating energy generation from supply, to make the market fairer, more  competitive and more transparent.

“This Tory-led Government has never stood up to the big energy companies. I am proud that Labour is leading on such an important issue for millions of people right across the country.”
