More people are killed each year at work than in wars, according to the TUC. This is tragic.

Everyone has the right to feel safe and protected in the workplace and yet, around the world, people are still dying because an employer decided safety at work just wasn’t that important.

Today -; to mark Workers’ Memorial Day -; I joined residents from across Sunderland for a very moving service at the Civic Centre, to remember those who have lost their lives at work.

Workers’ Memorial Day is always a poignant reminder that health and safety is something upon which people’s lives literally depend.

It is, however, also a rallying cry to fight for the living and still at risk.

Many of our employment rights and Health & Safety regulations are a legacy of our time in the EU, so it is vital that we make sure these protections remain in place.
