I’m delighted to hear that the hard-working gardeners of Red Machine Allotment site have scooped a £10,000 National Lottery grant – an award they really deserve.

It is believed the site dates to at least 1921, when a public meeting was held at Chester Road Council School to allot the first plots on the former Red Machine Farm land.

Generations of gardeners have since toiled the land and, with the help of the Lottery grant, new fencing and environmental improvements are now planned.

The Red Machine site has been at the heart of keeping the people of Humbledon and High Barnes happy and healthy for decades. Long may its success continue.
