During Prime Minister’s Question Time, Julie asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer, George Osborne – standing in for David Cameron – about tuition fees. The Coalition Government trebled tuition fees four years ago and now, the Government intends to create a Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) that would assess and grade the quality of teaching in universities, allowing the highest performing universities to increase their fees with inflation beyond the current £9,000 cap.

Julie asked the Chancellor, who has overseen these tuition fee hikes, why his views have changed so dramatically since 2003. In a letter to a constituent, Osborne described fees as a “tax on learning.”
