Changes to free school meals mean thousands will miss out

The Government’s plan to introduce a means-tested system for free school meals is extremely worrying.

All families in receipt of universal credit are automatically entitled to the meals at the moment, but the changes mean free meals will stop if a family earns £7,400 a year.

It is estimated that almost 3,000 children across Sunderland will miss out on meals due to this change, which is just not right or fair.

All children deserve a proper lunchtime meal, no matter what their background, so it’s really worrying that these changes will mean that some children from poorer backgrounds will lose out.
