Julie attended Westminster Flu Day earlier this week to encourage those at risk of seasonal flu in Sunderland Central to get their flu jab this winter.

Nearly half of those at risk and one in four people over the age of 65 in Sunderland were not vaccinated last year.

If you are over 65 or classed as being at risk, you are able to receive your vaccination free of charge on the NHS.  Seasonal flu is very infectious disease and the chances of catching flu this winter are dramatically reduced by getting vaccinated.

I would urge everyone who is eligible to make sure they receive their vaccine.

The Department of Health recommends free flu vaccinations in England for those aged 65 or over; and for people with certain chronic conditions such as chronic respiratory, heart, liver, neurological and kidney disease; diabetes; weakened immune systems; splenic dysfunction; as well as people living in long-stay facilities such as nursing and residential homes; carers of elderly or disabled people; pregnant women; children aged two, three and four; household contacts of immunocompromised individuals; healthcare professionals are also encouraged to have the vaccination.
