Julie Elliott MP Standing up for Sunderland Central
This week the House of Commons Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Committee – of which I am a member – called for free TV licences for over-75s to be reinstated.
Almost 5,000 households in Sunderland Central face losing their free licences under proposals announced earlier this year and I have been contacted by a great many constituents who are extremely concerned about this issue.
I hope that this report from the DCMS Committee puts pressure on the BBC and the Government to come to a successful negotiation and reinstate free licences for those over 75.
We must ensure that those who are vulnerable, or who cannot afford to pay, do not suffer.
